New York State Wine Pouring Team!

Since Sue and I will be working at the Ottawa Food and Wine Show starting on Friday, I thought I would post this photo taken by someone else.

Our Latest Addition!

We've adopted a stray kitten that Sue has been feeding since May, 2007. The mother had 5 kittens. We're not sure what happened to 3 of them but 2 survived. The other kitten was taken to the SPCA. We won't name the kitten until we're sure it will fit in with our family of 3 other cats!

Upside Down Railway Bridge, Lockport, NY

The bridge was built "upside down" in order to limit the size of ships passing through the canal. Railroad companies possessed much power at the turn of the century, and built the bridge this way to force companies to use rail to transport goods.

Barn in Autumn

We spotted this barn on the way to White Meadows Farm to pick up some maple syrup. Unfortunately, the weather wasn't very good so the sky is washed out. I spent quite a bit of time in PhotoShop to fix the background but for some reason didn't save the file! We'll have to make a return visit on a sunnier day.

Great Niece

Lockmaster (mistress)

While boating through one of the Erie Canal Locks, we spotted this very attractive blonde. We thought she was just watching the boat go through the lock but she turned out to be the "lockmaster". Is there a female version of lockmaster? We sure didn't want to make any dumb blonde jokes while she was filling up the lock with water!

On the Erie Canal

Sue and I went on a boat trip on the Erie Canal starting in Lockport, NY. The trip took us through a couple of the locks and up and down part of the canal. This photo was taken across from where the cruise boat was moored. The weather was cool and overcast but I managed to take a few photos anyway.

Yuck!

Some of the grapes didn't go through the crusher/de-stemmer and had to be removed. A messy job!

Grape Press

We're picking grapes again tomorrow so I thought this photo appropriate. It's the end of an older wine press at Calamus Winery or should I say "well used". There's a large bladder inside which squeezes the juice from the grapes.

Our Job is Done!

These scarecrows were used in the vineyards a few weeks ago. They're now just "resting" on the side of the barn.

Apres Grape Picking

After picking grapes on Saturday we went back to Calamus Winery to watch the grapes being crushed. We then got to try some Horne Brother Wines from previous vintages.

Beamsville Barn

We spotted this barn on the way to grape picking on Saturday. The sky was dramatic and dark but I didn't take a photo until a few hours later when the sky wasn't very exciting. The photo had to be fixed up in PhotoShop.

Happy Thanksgiving

Tomorrow is Canadian Thanksgiving but I imagine a lot of people will be having their Thanksgiving dinner today. This photo was taken at White Meadows Farm.

Fruits of Our Labour

We picked Chardonnay grapes this morning. It started off dry but by the time we had almost finished picking, the skies opened up. We should be able to try the wine from the grapes we picked next Fall.

There are a number of abandoned trains near the old Goderich railway station. This was taken last Thanksgiving.

Hawk in the Vineyards

This trained hawk was on display at Harbour Estates' open-house in September. Featherstone Winery in Vineland uses a similar hawk for controlling the bird population which can devestate a grape crop.

Lost by a Tail

We always see pictures of the horse that "won by a nose" but we very seldom see photos of the horse that placed last! Taken at Woodbine Racetrack in Toronto.
